Mountain biking season is in full swing! If you've already been riding your local trails for a couple of months, you might consider checking out somewhere new to change it up a little. And let's be honest, who doesn't love a good ol' road trip to explore somewhere new? We absolutely love planning day or weekend adventures to new trail systems! Read on for our 10 tips to maximize your weekend mountain bike adventures!

Located in Southern Ontario? Check out our 2022 Ride Out Recap and read about the places we got to ride last season.

Check the Weather:

Check the local weather forecast of the area you'll be riding. This will help you determine what clothing to wear and whether you'll need to pack any additional gear like rain jackets or extra layers. It'll also be your major deciding factor whether the location chosen is appropriate for the given forecast.

Research & Plan Your Route:

Navigating a new trail system can be daunting! Try to link up with a friend or local that knows the area, or check out the Recommended Routes available on TrailForks. If you can, map out a route in advance so you have something to follow (either by TrailForks or by loading the route onto a GPS device).

Make A Checklist & Pack Ahead:

Make sure nothing gets forgotten by making a checklist and packing everything into a bag/bin for safekeeping in advance. You could even pack everything into the vehicle the night before. Trust me, no one likes getting to a ride only to find they've forgotten their helmet. What a buzz kill!

Equipment & Bike Check:

Do your bike and equipment check the night before so there are no hidden surprises in the morning or, worse, at the trailhead. You'll also have time to potentially fix anything if needed.

Charge Electronics:

If you are using electronics, such as GPS devices, cameras, and your cell phone, make sure they are fully charged. This ensures you can track your ride, navigate the trail, make some memories, and, most importantly, stay safe.

Fuel Up:

Eat a hearty and balanced meal the night before. Load up on snacks, and don't forget to pack or plan your lunch for after the ride!

Hydrate:

Drink plenty of water the day before and in the hours leading up to your ride to ensure you're well-hydrated. Carry water and electrolyte-based drinks, such as Skratch, during the ride to stay hydrated and avoid party poopers like dehydration and cramps.

Rest Well:

This goes without needing saying, but try to get a good night's sleep!

Double-Check:

Before you hit the road, double-check that you have packed everything on your checklist so nothing gets forgotten.

Go for the Experience, Not the Expectation:

Riding new places can challenge our skill and fitness level. Instead of becoming frustrated with yourself for not riding everything or walking through some obstacles, focus on the fact that you're there for the experience and not the expectation.

By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared for your mountain bike adventure, ensuring a smoother, more enjoyable experience on the trails.
